Welcome to the Hyunam-Dong Bookshop, this book is so good. You will feel like quietly wondering about life, having deep thoughts, a Q&A sometime with your inner self sometimes with friends. There's Books, love of reading, all set in a bookshop which makes this story special even the non readers and especially coffee lovers too will enjoy the nature of the story. It has a very cool, calming vibe to it.

Welcome to the Hyunam-Dong Bookshop by Hwang Bo-reum, translated by Shanna Tan, is a Korean-inspired contemporary fictional novel where you get to read about books, bookshops, and coffee. If someone asked me which book I would like to live in, it would be this one. This was such a heartfelt and warm hug read for me after reading a long and chunky fantasy novel. Yeong-ju was such a perfect FMC here that I genuinely felt for her and her love for bookshops and books. Minjun was equally good with his coffee and as a barista for the book café. Two of my favorite things were the main things flowing in this book, and I was feeling so content while reading it. The book is not just about the daily rituals and shenanigans of running an independent bookshop, but also about friendships, a slice of life, relationships you build along the way, and so much more. It's about each character who visited this bookstore and found solace in books, along with me, who enjoyed this journey through the pages of a book. However, the book was a solid 4 star read for me and not 5 since it lacked that one surprising moment or element that would take this plot to the next level. It was a flat line for me and did not rise at any point, but overall, it was a total cozy read because of its topic.

Simple and slow storyline but it makes me reflect on my own life. We often thought that life would get a lot easier once we did the first button properly, but what if there's no hole in the first place?

This book won’t blow you away, but it will give you a good feeling inside. It’s a warm, gentle read. The story is well written and enjoyable, if a little slow at times. That being said, I think it’s worth a read, especially if you’re a big fan of atmosphere and your high street bookshops.

It was a little difficult at first getting everyone’s names right. Once everything clicked into place it was an absolute pleasure to read. In parts thought provoking. Liked the short chapters too. Brilliant read

For a debut novel, this is fantastic. It follows the story of a bookshop owner who quit corporate life to live out her childhood dream. Throughout the story we meet many other characters, the barista, the woman who knits, the coffee roaster, who all orbit the bookshop. And for a book called “Welcome to the Hyunam-dong Bookshop”, you’d be forgiven for thinking that this story is about books. And whilst there are plenty of good book recommendations throughout its pages, this is a novel about life. It’s about relationships, it’s about work life balance (or the lack there of), and most of all, it’s about finding one’s path in spite of expectation. I loved this book, having both read and listened to the peaceful works of Hwang Bo-reum, and I look forward to seeing what this author publishes next!

I have just only finished this book, and I am stil processing what I think about this book. Yes, this book pulls at heartstrings and is thought provoking for anyone willing to introspect but there are complex aspects that, I believe, are simplified, and that kept me away from completely accepting the book and author’s narration.

Despite some reservations, I did enjoy this literary fiction work to a great extent. The translation seems to be on point, through only a native speaker would be able to judge this properly. Recommended only to literary fiction lovers who would love a book about bookshops and all things within. It is a mood read, and a book not to be rushed through but to be savoured. This debut novel was a bestseller in Korea, and I can see why. Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of this book at my request and these are my honest thoughts about it.
