This series remains on top of my favorites. A hug in the form of a book. Rating: 5/5 Total time read: 2H 46M In the fourth novel of this series, with four new stories of people wanting to go back to the past to make amends with their loved ones, this novel still rings close to my heart. Out of the four stories, the last on "The Daugher" made me ugly cry the most. Wow. “You shouldn’t worry about that.” Kengo interrupted her. “I’m your father, I don’t care if you swear at me, as long as you’re fine. That’s all that matters.” “I’m glad I’m your daughter.”

The tales start in a Café in Tokyo called Funiculi Funicula. Before We Say Goodbye is the fourth book in the Before the Coffee Gets Cold quartet. It is advisable to read the novels in sequence because the characters develop as the story of the windowless basement café proceeds. There is a diagram showing the main characters but it is incomplete and the relationship between Nagare and Kazu took me a while to work out. The woman in white remains a mysterious character for many pages. However, these slight difficulties did not detract from my pleasure in reading something that is so different from any Western novel. Each book is very short, only 150 to 200 pages and each one is written to the same exact formula. A person loses a loved one and desperately wishes they had done or said something before the tragedy happened. Often it has to do with not having expressed some emotion or having misunderstood a situation. It turns out that if one sits in a particular chair in the café one can go back in time and although one cannot change the present one can meet up with the deceased and have one last conversation. But there are rules. One must drink up before the coffee gets cold, otherwise one can never return to the present. There is a good deal of repetition. Details such as the lack of windows, the three clocks that each tell a different time, the ceiling fan, the smell of the coffee and the lack of music make up a sort of chorus that is almost hypnotic as is the ritual of pouring out the coffee that allows a person sitting in that particular chair go back to the past, or it turns out, go forwards into the future. There is extensive soul searching as each character decides why they want to do whatever it is that may make the dead rest more easily and indeed allow the living to get on with a happy life. There is one important message that is debated at length in each book: each individual learns that to honour the dead we must live happy and fulfilling lives. However difficult that might seem. They would not want us to be miserable. Strongly recommended.

If you could go back, who would you want to meet? Before the Coffee gets Cold series has been one of my favourite. It is a fiction with a non-fiction touch. I completely enjoyed each book of the series and was looking forward for the fourth part after its announcement. And as soon the fourth part was available on Amazon I pre-ordered the book and was waiting for the D- day. The sad part here is after I got my book, I was not able to read it due to my exams and work. This Diwali I had my whole day devoted for the book and I enjoyed each bit of the festival reading this book. The book definitely changes the perception on life. Each book has four stories which shares the delicate concepts of love, relationship and the importance of time. After visiting the Donna Donna cafe at the Northern Japan, we are back to Funicula Funicula at Tokyo. The rules of the cafe are explained here and there again with more information about who the ghost in the cafe is and her relationship with Kazu. I was completely engrossed and excited. The book shares the importance of relationship, time, human emotions and most importantly being at the present. The importance of living regret free life is potrayed. I understand it's not always possible to be with no regrets but we can always try and make sure that we live a life with no regret. The book is a source of self introspection. It strikes us with a harsh truth that no matter how hard we try we can't change our past actions. Thus its a takeaway to live our life with utmost care by not hurting people around us, not to take relationship for granted and not to treat people for granted. Understand people as you are ie. Have more of empathy rather than being sympathetic. PS - This series is now my go to recommendations for anyone who ask me to suggest a book. Hence definitely grab your book today and read it.

If you've been a fan of this series, emotional, simple stories about relationships are definitely your cup of coffee. So you should definitely buy it! I cried while reading the second and the last story and it was all very cathartic to me. And I'm so glad that I read it in one sitting, on a Sunday afternoon. It has all my heart.

What would you do if you had a chance to go back in time? Would you accept that you have actually done such monumental mistakes that you would have to alter the planetary rotation, tear the fabric of time and reverse the boundaries of physics? Or would you do this for the heck of an adventure? Fourth time lucky, the reader and the author both. Toshikazu in his fourth instalment of ‘Before the coffee gets cold’ brings yet another heart-warming coffee tales at Funiculi Funicula. The regular patrons at the magical Cafe Funiculi Funicula are well acquainted with its famous legend and extraordinary, secret menu that offers the wonders of time travel. Many travellers have reunited with old love, made amends with estranged family, and visited the ones they missed. But the journey, as we must know, is not without risks and there are rules to follow. There are new exciting characters and a parade of twists and turns that clash with the very concept of time. It’s heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time. Do pick it up if you like your coffee hot and frothy. And even if you are a tea person like me, have a sip at this occasional treat.
