If you like chess and romance you'll like this book. I know nothing about chess, but I still liked the book. Ali is always good.

I loved this book so much! There were so many great things about this book. The characters were amazing. Nolan and Mallory are a great match. But I especially loved the side characters.I want a book about Defne and Oz! Mallory's sisters were a riot. Ali Hazelwood is quickly becoming an Auto- buy author for me. I can't wait to read the next book.

I’ll admit the beginning is really slow, to the point I was about to give up on it. I love Ali Hazelwood books, they are funny books that focus on women in STEM careers, which are male dominated. I’ve read all of them many times and that’s why I gave this book more of a chance than I normally would. Once it got started, it was engaging and I was hooked. My only criticism is that the book ends in an anticlimax, which made the ending feel unfinished. I still recommend buying for the window into chess, the complex character arc of the main character, and the subtle romance.

Chess, Young Adults, Enemies to Lovers, also he falls first tropes has Ali Hazelwood venturing into the genre of sports romance of sports, away from her genre of STEM! Check and Mate! Mallory has brought herself really away from Chess, it's what she believes broke her family and also killed her dad. Striving hard to provide both monetarily and mentally for her family of two younger sisters and unwell mom, she seems to have taken on the world at hand with all of its burdens. She blames herself for all of it and in spite of being a prodigy, she is working at a garage to earn cash. A charitable chess event which is cajoled into, however, changes her track onto the board again! She defeats the 'King Killer' in a surprising turn of events. Nolan 'King Killer' Sawyer has not lost a match since forever and how he takes this defeat is what takes us onto the story! Nolan has stood undeafeated for a long time and hi defeat actually starts with Mal s start to climbing the charts. With the help of a trust fund, she trains and starts competing at the same time. How they will cross paths, share their stories, unite against rogues in chess, involve in with family and friends but never play against each other is what will bring us to the climax! Maybe not my fav by Ali but the perspectives are all there, I think the camaraderie amongst Mals sisters and mom, her longing for college and both of them learning to kind of forgive themselves for the past are parts that attracted me. Obviously there is a detailed view of current chess tournament playouts and I was quite interested to know those processes as well!

I have read a ton of romances but what was this?! ROMANCE ON STEROIDS?! I don’t know what Ali infuses into her writing, but it’s nothing short of magic! You can’t help but root for her characters and you’re hurtling through the pages at breakneck speed in your quest to find that happy ending! Mallory, who is a chess prodigy, has steered clear of the game for four years since it shattered her life. When she reluctantly agrees to play one last time for charity, she wins the game against the World Champion, Nolan Sawyer! What follows is a whirlwind of tournaments and emotions and a budding romance that will make you want to start playing chess right away! If you’re someone who loved Queen’s Gambit, this is right up your alley! I have probably played 5 games of chess in my life and have been checkmated in all of them! 😂🙈 The game has always intrigued me and when I read about a romance centred around chess, I KNEW I had to get my hands on a copy! I picked it up the moment I received it and flew through it in one sitting! This book addresses grief and how people have different ways of processing it. The portrayal of loss of a family member was realistically done and the author doesn’t shy away from packing them punches! The chronic illness representation was a plus too! The romance between Mallory and Nolan was *chef’s kiss*. The slowburn romance had me constantly anticipating and I can’t help but blush and giggle at how it all panned out in the end! Female friendships play a huge role in my life and I’m extremely grateful for them and the one between Mallory and Easton was once again realistic and depicted in a way most of us can relate to. The side characters had their own time to shine and I love me a book that does its side characters justice! Financial struggles are a part of life and the sacrifices one has to make sometimes in order to make ends meet added a poignant element to the story. The power of the unconditional love of family shines through the pages and it had me sniffling! 🥺 If you haven’t already given in to the hype and want to do so after reading this review, please go ahead and pick the book up right away! You will not be disappointed, I’m sure! Huge thanks to Hachette India for sending me a copy for review! <3

4.50⭐️ I can always trust Ali Hazelwood to deliver with a swoony romance with an engaging plot and loveable characters 🩷 I love Ali Hazelwood and all of her books so I was eagerly anticipating her YA debut ever since it was announced. And I absolutely adored Check & Mate, devoured it within a couple of hours! I’m going to try making a list of all the things I loved:- - Nolan Sawyer. Loved him so, so much!! Especially the fact that he was so in love with Mallory from that very first meeting!! I have always been a fan of ‘he falls first’ so of course I love Nolan but he was also just all around adorable and so uncomplicated. Loved his personality too, so charming! - Mallory’s sisters Darcy and Sabrina. Well, I didn’t like Sabrina all that much in the beginning because she sounded like a total brat but then she grew on me and logically speaking, she’s just a kid. I really enjoyed their interactions and humour! - Easton, Defne, Oz, Emil and Tanu. I always love a good supportive group of friends! - Nolan and Mallory’s chemistry: Gosh, it was electrifying! I was living for every one of their interactions which is also why I flew through the book! It was everything!!! - Both Nolan and Mallory were dealing with some serious issues, I liked how Mallory’s story was made intriguing to the reader by slowly disclosing little pieces of information, it made the story all the more interesting. - I had learned to play (really bad) chess when I was a kid so mostly, I knew nothing about it but Ali Hazelwood still managed to make it interesting for me. I was fully invested in all the chess scenes as well so that’s definitely something I absolutely loved about this book. Things I hated:- - Malte Koch. He was so ridiculous, he made my blood boil. I was so happy with the ending he got. Only reducing 0.5⭐️ because I just felt that it was shorter than what I wanted. I wanted more of Nolan- Mallory romance, more of their friendship, more of their moments together. I also felt that the last chapter before the epilogue was kind of rushed. Also most definitely wanted to see more of Emil and Tanu AND their friendship/ scenes with Nolan and Mallory. But overall, it was definitely one of my favourites of the year! I had a really good time reading it and would definitely reread plus recommend to everyone!

Okay so this was a very cute read, I really liked both the main characters. I could relate with Mallory and her breakdown towards the end really made me cry. Nolan was such a sweet man, he encouraged Mal and never let her feel like she was less. I wanted them to work because they were obviously very good for each other. The plot sometimes felt boring but still I read it in one sitting. I felt like some side characters were good while some were annoying and the epilogue could've been written better. So overall I enjoyed reading this book but it wasn't as good as I was expecting it to be tbh.
