This is not the only parenting book you'll need (of course), but I think it's a valuable addition to most reading lists for parents. It provides research-based ideas that aren't fads or guesses, but are 'big-picture' frameworks useful for parents of kids of any age. Great overview of parenting styles and philosophies. Fascinating original research over 15 years. Helps understanding of our many different roles, well beyond sitting and helping with homework. It's more preparing the field our kids will battle on, making their work be worthwhile.
Now, the 'highly successful' in the title is meant to be a broadly inclusive term, but the nature of the original research does bias the results to elite college-bound academic pursuits, but with that understanding, it's still an interesting, engaging, and actually practical book.

I appreciate this book's attempt to redefine success and move away from the "Tiger Mom" paradigm. There are several interesting case studies put forth, along with anecdotes and quotes from various experts.

It's interesting to see studies like these because in no way could I ever 100% believe everything a book like this would suggest to be a "master parent". I always read research with the bias that whatever the hypothesis, the study will gravitate to that theory even if it is attempting to debunk it.
Now with that said, there are some very helpful tips and tricks and lessons for both parent and child in this book. Do I think it's the ONLY formula to getting your child to achieve at his highest level? Absolutely not.
But for an exciting read on a different perspective of releasing potential, this is a great read!

This is really a very helpful tool for anyone striving to do the best for their child and trying to raise a productive member of society. There are a lot of good techniques and suggestions as well as learning tools for parents to use while their child is growing into a young adult.
Not everything will apply to everyone of course but most anyone can get some valuable insight into what it takes to be a good parent and how practical their own parenting methods are. If more people read more books like this society would be much better off than it is today and I applaud the author for taking the time and applying the effort to help others learn. Well done.

I haven't read the book cover to cover yet, but so far I'm very impressed with this book. It has taught me some great skills and understanding of raising a child, particularly helping with my grand babies. It has given me insight that I didn't realize I needed. It's also helped me learn new approaches too. I'm glad to have this book to refererence and to ease my mind. I'm grateful to have this book.

I read a lot of these books and this one is among the better ones. More anecdotal than true research but still very interesting. It uses Ivy League status as a measure of success so if that bothers you skip this book.

After a career of fifty years as a practicing pediatrician. I find “The Formula” to be the most comprehensive, compelling and refreshing book that gives parents and their support system a clear understanding of human interaction in brain development. The roll of parenting as defined inThe Formula is inclusive of basic guidelines parents and their support system can follow to enhance the success throughout their child’s life, irrespective of their economic, educational or ethnicity. This book must be in the hands or every parent to read and discuss.
It is the greatest gift that I share with parents.
