Neel Preet
Book: The India Way: Strategies for an Uncertain World Author: Dr. S. Jaishankar Publisher: HarperCollins India (2022) Total Pages: 248 Reviewed By: Neel Preet In "The India Way: Strategies for an Uncertain World," Dr. S. Jaishankar, India's Minister of External Affairs, offers a compelling roadmap for the nation's rise in a rapidly changing global landscape. He delves into the transformative years since the 2008 financial crisis, emphasizing the reshaping of international relations and the emergence of a new world order. For India, this presents both challenges and opportunities, demanding a strategic recalibration to secure its place as a leading power! Jaishankar's analysis is grounded in a clear understanding of the current geopolitical landscape. He outlines the shifting power dynamics, the rise of new players like China, and the ongoing uncertainties caused by global crises like the COVID-19 pandemic. Against this backdrop, he emphasizes the need for India to maintain optimal relationships with all major powers, navigating a complex web of alliances and interests without compromising its national goals. However, "The India Way" is not just about navigating the global arena. Jaishankar also advocates for a bolder and more assertive approach towards India's immediate neighborhood. He calls for a non-reciprocal strategy, where India takes the initiative in fostering regional stability and development, even without expecting immediate reciprocation from its neighbors. This, he argues, is not only a strategic necessity but also a moral imperative, stemming from India's historical and cultural ties to the region! The book's strength lies in its multifaceted approach. Jaishankar seamlessly blends historical context with contemporary analysis, drawing upon India's rich civilizational heritage to inform its foreign policy. He reminds readers that India is not a newcomer to the global stage, but a nation with a long and illustrious history that has shaped its values and aspirations. This understanding of India's unique identity is crucial in formulating a foreign policy that is both effective and true to its core principles. Furthermore, "The India Way" is not just a theoretical treatise; it is a practical guide for action. Jaishankar outlines concrete policy recommendations, urging India to leverage its growing economic and technological capabilities to build a global footprint. He emphasizes the importance of engaging with the global Indian diaspora, a powerful network that can serve as a force multiplier for India's interests abroad. Key Takeaways: i) The global order is undergoing a transformative shift, demanding a strategic recalibration for India. ii) Optimal relationships with all major powers, coupled with a bolder approach towards the neighborhood, are crucial for India's rise. iii) India's historical and cultural heritage informs its foreign policy, making it a civilizational power with a unique perspective. iv) Concrete policy recommendations focus on leveraging India's strengths and building a global footprint. v) Engaging the Indian diaspora is vital for maximizing India's influence and soft power. While "The India Way" primarily focuses on India's foreign policy, it offers valuable insights into international relations and the changing world order. Dr. Jaishankar's analysis is not limited to India's perspective; he provides a nuanced understanding of the global dynamics at play, making the book relevant to readers interested in international affairs beyond the Indian context. The book is also timely, published as India embarks on its "Amrit Kaal," a 25-year period leading to the centenary of its independence. "The India Way" serves as a roadmap for this crucial period, outlining the challenges and opportunities India faces in its quest to become a leading global power! Overall, "The India Way" is a thought-provoking and insightful read for anyone interested in India's trajectory in the 21st century. Dr. Jaishankar's clear analysis, strategic recommendations, and emphasis on India's unique identity make this book a valuable contribution to the discourse on global affairs. It is a must-read for policymakers, scholars, and anyone who wants to understand the forces shaping India's future and its potential to shape the world.

Some of the insights that were presented in this book seemed to be coming from such a depth of not just perception/years of plain research/experience but a perception that was nurtured and crafted by the rich, ancient cultural reserves of this land. And the way sir effortlessly and delicately portrays the outlooks of the global problems that have existed and are existing coz of various developments in the history and the idea of how they can be handled for a collective and sustainable progress of not just nations but humanity, as not something of his own but of India's is such a finesse in expressing the unexpressed. I had to carry this book wherever I went until I was done. I can say thank you Jaishankar sir, but honestly I don't know how to mention enough. This book, the man had been an integral part of my journey. Do give this one a try. Jai Hind.
